Big Rig Accident Round Up

Here is a list of some of the big rig and big truck accidents that occurred around the country recently:

“Pig rig crash?”: A stretch of the 60 Freeway in the City of Industry was snarled after a big rig carrying live pigs spilled a load of the animals on the freeway, killing some of the animals. According to an article in CBS News’ Web site, the big rig accident occurred on the connector from the southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway to the westbound 60 Freeway. The bus driver, identified as Claud Emmett Martin, 58, of Arizona, was driving south on the transition road when he changed lanes and steered to the left, officials said. He suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Dangerous big-rig load: A woman was dead in Pasadena, Texas, after a tank fell off from a big rig and crushed her sport utility vehicle, the local KPRC Channel reports. According to local police, the tractor trailer with an oversize load went under a railroad overpass that was too low for it. The woman died at the scene. The big-rig driver apparently had state approval to travel in this route, which is required for such cargo.

One killed: A fiery big-rig crash killed the truck’s driver in Vermont.

According to the article, the tractor trailer crashed through a guardrail and plunged 50 feet off an Interstate 91 bridge bursting into flames and fatally injuring the driver. The driver and passenger in another vehicle were treated for injuries.

18-wheeler crash: One man died when the 18-wheeler he was driving left the southbound lane of Interstate 85 and hit a tree in Opelika, Alabama. According to this NBC News article, the big rig also caught fire soon after the collision. Authorities suspect that the truck driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Passenger dead: A man who was riding in a Mack truck died after the truck collided with a train in Seminole County, Florida. According to this article, Joe Wilson, 52, was a passenger in the truck when it crashed with an Amtrak train at State Road 427. He was reportedly taken to the hospital with critical injuries, but died later. The driver of the truck was also hospitalized with injuries. The truck driver could face charges because he reportedly went on to the tracks, but got stuck in traffic and couldn’t move.
