Los Angeles police officials are asking for the public’s help to find the driver who fatally struck a bicyclist in the Van Nuys area and then left the scene. According to a KTLA news report, the deadly crash occurred early morning on March 6 near the intersection of Roscoe and Sepulveda boulevards in Van Nuys.
Fatal Bicycle Collision
The LAPD released a video this week showing the 38-year-old man on a bicycle riding through a gas station before the car struck him. Police said a vehicle was traveling east on Roscoe Boulevard when it collided with the victim who was bicycling across the intersection within the crosswalk at the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard.
The driver failed to stop and render aid or identify himself or herself as required by California law. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced the bicyclist dead. Police believe the vehicle involved is a dark-colored 2007-2011, four-door Toyota Camry. Driver description is not available. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact LAPD at 818-644-8022.
We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the deceased bicyclist for their tragic loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Justice for Victims and Families
California law requires motorists to stop and remain at the scene of an injury or fatal accident. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states that motorists should also exchange pertinent information with other parties involved, and most importantly, render aid to the injured victims, which could be something as simple as getting them medical attention by calling 911.
Families of deceased hit-and-run victims may be able to hold the at-fault driver by filing a wrongful death lawsuit, which seeks compensation for damages such as medical expenses, funeral and burial costs, lost future income, pain and suffering and loss of love, care and companionship. An knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims’ families about how their own auto insurance policy might be able to compensate them if the hit-and-run driver has not been apprehended or in cases where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
