A 35-year-old man was killed in a Los Angeles car accident that also resulted in injuries to six other people. According to a City News Service report, the fiery car accident occurred on West Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades, the early morning of August 3, 2011.
Officials say the 27-year-old female driver crashed her 2002 Ford Focus into a streetlight along the highway and then a wall, before the vehicle burst into flames. A 35-year-old man died at the scene. The driver and a 15-year-old passenger were airlifted to an area hospital in critical condition. A 10-year-old passenger sustained multiple broken bones while three others, ages 17, 6 and 1, sustained relatively minor injuries. The relationship between the driver and the passengers is not known at this time.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of the man killed in this tragic accident. My thoughts and prayers are also with the many injured victims of this crash. I wish them all a complete and speedy recovery.
Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 227 people were killed and 25,043 were injured in Los Angeles car accidents. During that same year, there were 554 fatalities and 50,817 injuries reported due to Los Angeles County car accidents.
What Caused This Fatal Crash?
There are many questions left unanswered by this report. What caused the vehicle to crash into the pole? Officials are saying, based on preliminary investigations, that excessive speed was a factor in this accident. But it is not clear precisely how fast the driver was going at the time or if other factors played a part in this crash as well. Did another vehicle force the car off the roadway? Did a dangerous roadway condition contribute to the crash? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine what occurred here and why.
Liability Issues
In this particular case, if the driver is determined to have been at fault, then, she could not only face criminal charges, but also be held civilly liable for the resulting injuries, damages and losses. Families of deceased victims and injured victims in such cases would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
