Fatal Los Angeles Car Accident Kills Motorcyclist

Loren Savitsky, 23, died in a Los Angeles car accident after he lost control of his motorcycle, fell and was then struck by a car on the 134 Freeway in Glendale, California. According to a CBS News report, Savitsky was driving his Yamaha motorcycle in the second left lane of the eastbound Ventura Freeway the night of September 4, 2009, when he lost control of his motorcycle and was thrown off the bike. California Highway Patrol officers suspect Savitsky made an “unsafe turning movement” right before the crash. A 39-year-old man driving a Toyota reportedly hit Savitsky. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Loren Savitsky for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. I offer my deepest sympathies to them. Please keep them in your prayers.

Los Angeles Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities but 37 injuries reported in Glendale as a result of motorcycle accidents. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 85 deaths and 2,792 injuries occurred in 2007 involving motorcycle accidents.

Based on the preliminary information available in this news report, CHP officials believe Savitsky lost control of his Yamaha because of an unsafe turn. However, there are still several unanswered questions here. Did the driver of the Toyota have sufficient time to stop before hitting Savitsky? How fast was the driver of the Toyota going? Was there a mechanical malfunction or an auto product defect in the Yamaha motorcycle that may have caused Savitsky to lose control of his motorcycle?
