Lisa Hylla, 25, was killed and five others were injured in a Los Angeles car accident the morning of May 3, 2010. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the fatal car crash occurred early morning on the northbound 405 Freeway near Devonshire Street. California Highway Patrol officials said Hylla was driving a 2007 Toyota Scion that was involved in a collision with a 1984 Toyota pickup truck that was occupied by a couple. The pickup truck, driven by a 64-year-old Richmond man, was then struck by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s patrol car occupied by two male deputies. Hylla was thrown into the southbound lanes of traffic. It is still not clear whether Hylla exited her car or if she was ejected from her vehicle.
Three men and one woman were transported to the hospital. The couple sustained moderate injuries while the deputies escaped with minor injuries. The deputies, who were on-duty at the time, were in a marked patrol car at the time and were assigned to the sheriff’s Lennox station. An investigation is ongoing.
I offer my deepest condolences to everybody who knew and loved Lisa Hylla for their tragic, untimely and heartbreaking loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to her grieving family members.
Los Angeles Traffic Accident Statistics
There were 268 deaths and 25,588 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles, according to CHP’s 2008 traffic accident statistics. Countywide, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
A Complex Investigation Ahead
There is no question that this is going to be a complicated investigation. Officials are trying to determine the sequence of events, which apparently involved more than one collision. They are also in the process of determining what caused Hylla to be thrown into the southbound lanes of traffic. I trust CHP officials will conduct a fair and objective investigation in order to establish precisely what occurred here. Hylla’s family members deserve to get answers.
Protecting Their Rights
In such cases family members of deceased accident victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. Where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation to cover funeral expenses, lost future earnings, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages.
What tips would you offer to those whose vehicles stall in the middle of the freeway or those who are involved in minor collisions on the freeway? How can they stay safe while waiting for help to arrive?
