A 39-year-old man sustained fatal injuries in a Los Angeles car accident the night of July 7, 2010, according to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune. California Highway Patrol officials say that the crash occurred on the westbound 10 Freeway near State Street. The man, an El Monte resident, was found in his 2005 Toyota car, which had rolled over on its roof. A 33-year-old motorcyclist, riding a 2008 Harley-Davidson was involved in the crash, but was uninjured, officials say. The driver of the Toyota was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries shortly after the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
I offer my heartfelt sympathies to this deceased motorist’s family and friends for their tragic and devastating loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to CHP’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 268 deaths and 25,588 injuries involving car accidents in the city of Los Angeles. Countywide, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Circumstances of the Crash
Based on this news report, it is not clear how or why this fatal car crash occurred. There are still several unanswered questions here. Was the motorcycle actually struck in this collision? Who was at fault for the accident? Did the driver of the Toyota lose control of his vehicle and crash in an effort to avoid the motorcyclist? In what way was the motorcyclist involved in the crash? Was either one of the drivers impaired, distracted, speeding or otherwise negligent at the time of the accident? Did auto product defects cause the Toyota driver’s fatal injuries? I trust officials are looking at these and other issues in order to determine exactly what occurred here and why.
