LAPD detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify a hit-and-run driver who left 33-year-old Anibal Macias Jr. fatally injured in downtown Los Angeles on Jan. 23. According to a KTLA news report, the incident occurred in the area of Alameda and 22nd streets. Investigators found that a vehicle of an unknown make and model struck Macias as he was walking on the sidewalk.
Fatal Collision
Police say Macias was struck and dragged onto the street. Paramedics responded and provided medical treatment, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The hit-and-run driver did not stop and fled the scene. Officials are offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the offender’s identification, apprehension and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact LAPD at 213-833-3713. The investigation is ongoing.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver not only struck a pedestrian who was walking on the sidewalk but left the scene without stopping to provide any type of assistance. Under California Vehicle Code 20001 (a), motorists are required to stop immediately after an injury crash and remain at the scene until the authorities arrive. Drivers are also required to exchange pertinent information with other parties involved in the collision and most importantly, provide aid to the injured victims, which might be something as simple as calling 911 so they get prompt medical care and attention.
