Three people – two children and an adult – were injured in a collision involving a school bus and a minivan in Santa Ana on the afternoon of June 28.
According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the driver of a Toyota Sienna allegedly failed to yield for a stop sign on northbound Daisy Avenue at Willits Street and slammed into a school bus that was going west on Willits.
Ongoing Investigation
California Highway Patrol officials said the bus careened through a fence and into a yard. The minivan was going about 40 to 50 mph before the crash and the bus was traveling at about 20 mph. The driver of the Sienna was transported to an area hospital with what were described as “moderate” injuries.
Four students ranging in age from 9 to 15 were on board the school bus. Two of those children were transported to an area hospital to be checked for complaints of pain and the two other students were released to a parent or guardian, officials said. No arrests or citations were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this crash. We wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Laws and Liability Issues
California law requires drivers to come to a complete stop at a stop sign and proceed with caution. According to California Vehicle Code section 21802 (a): “The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop as required by Section 22450. The driver shall then yield the right-of-way to any vehicles which have approached from another highway, or which are approaching so closely as to constitute an immediate hazard, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to those vehicles until he or she can proceed with reasonable safety.”
In such cases, the at-fault parties can be held liable for the injuries, damages, and losses caused. Injured victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, pain and suffering, and emotional distress. An experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer will be able to stay on top of the official investigation and help ensure that victims’ legal rights and best interests are protected.
