Woman Killed in Arlington Heights Hit and Run Crash

Shawnkel Washington, 27, was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The victim’s girlfriend, Brianna Brown, told CBS News that Washington left their apartment to get something from her car early morning on July 2. Her car was parked across the street at the intersection of Pico Boulevard and Wilton Place. Two minutes later, Brown heard a crash and ran outside to find the tragic scene.

Fatal Arlington Heights Hit-and-Run Crash

Brown saw Washington lying in the street and tried to give her CPR. Surveillance video obtained by CBS Los Angeles showed Washington walking in the crosswalk when a white Nissan going eastbound struck her. Police said the driver stopped and even got out of his car before he drove off. Washington’s family members have expressed hurt and anger and told CBS they won’t rest until this driver who took her life is held responsible. Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact LAPD’s West Traffic Division.

We offer our deepest condolences to Shawnkel Washington’s family members and loved ones. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Compensation for Victims’ Families

It is against the law to leave the scene of an injury or fatal crash under California Vehicle Code Section 20001(a), which states that drivers must stop immediately and remain at the scene until the authorities arrive. Motorists are also required to exchange pertinent information with other parties involved and most importantly, render aid to the injured victim so they can get prompt medical attention and care.

Coping with a loved one’s sudden loss can be a large enough burden for families. When you add to that the lack of closure and not being able to hold the at-fault party accountable, the emotional trauma multiplies. Families of hit-and-run victims may also struggle financially because they are faced with sudden medical expenses and funeral and burial costs. Victims may be able to seek compensation for their losses in such cases. An experienced Los Angeles hit-and-run accident attorney can help injured hit-and-run victims and families of deceased victims examine their legal rights and options.
