Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents
Based on this news report, it is unclear what might have caused this particular bicycle accident. However, here are some of the most common causes of fatal bicycle accidents in Southern California:
- Distracted driving: When drivers are not paying attention to the road, they are more likely to injure vulnerable commuters such as bicyclists or pedestrians. Common forms of distractions while driving that can endanger or harm bicyclists include texting, looking at the phone, eating, drinking, or talking to passengers.
- Lack of adequate buffer: Drivers who follow bicyclists too closely or pass within less than 3 feet of a bicyclist can create hazardous situations. Such drivers who don’t leave an adequate buffer are more likely to hit and seriously injure bicyclists.
- Failure to yield: Bicyclists have the same rights as drivers of other vehicles under California law. Drivers who fail to yield to bicyclists can cause catastrophic crashes.
- Bike lane incursions: Bike lanes are meant to create safe spaces for bicyclists. However, a reckless or inattentive driver could potentially go into a bike lane and strike a bicyclist. These types of accidents can cause severe injuries as well.
