The California personal injury lawyers at Bisnar Chase Personal Injury Attorneys are proud to be a part of the Boys to Men 100 Wave Challenge. The event will be held this Saturday at the end of San Fernando Place in Mission Beach. Funds raised will help Boys to Men teach, support, mentor and encourage boys to become compassionate, accountable men.
The 100 Wave Challenge will include 70 men and women who are eagerly awaiting this weekend’s event. The volunteer’s will be loading up their surfboards and joining others in 60-degree water with the goal of catching 100 waves in 12 hours. Each surfer has a goal to raise $1,000 by recruiting friends and family to sponsor them.
You may be asking yourself, who would sacrifice their Saturday to spend 12 hours in 60-degree water? The answer, men and women who realize how important this event is for the work done at Boys to Men and that they are doing this for a purpose bigger than all of us. After joining in on the fun and seeing the effect this amazing program has on the lives of young men, you just might join them in next year’s event.
What Inspired the 100 Wave Challenge?
Last year in September one of the co-founders of Boys to Men, Joe Sigurdson, was out surfing with his son in law. It was a beautiful day with great Santa Ana winds and 2-3 foot waves. In about 3 hours Joe had caught somewhere between 30 to 40 waves. Joe was excited. His day out surfing gave him an idea. He had wondered how long it would take him to catch 100 waves? Then another idea came to him. Would people sponsor him to do this? Could he raise money for Boys to Men by surfing? Eventually, the idea evolved into the 100 Wave Challenge. The goal is to have 100 surfers catch 100 waves in 12 hours.
“Everyone involved in this weekend’s event is going to have a really good time,” said Sigurdson. “Some of the generous companies in our community have pitched in to provide breakfast from Souplantation, lunch from Rubios, and massages in the afternoon.”
How Boys to Men Started
Boys to Men was founded by two men, Joe Sigurdson and Craig McClain. Their vision was simple, build communities of men who teach, support, mentor and encourage boys to become compassionate, accountable men. This vision came to Sigurdson after he had observed his sons childhood friends fall victim to troublesome lives. All four of these young boys came from households with no father figure. By setting a positive example, Sigurdson and McClain set out to make a difference in the lives of young men.
Starting Boys to Men was not easy. Building the program was a fulltime job and both Joe and Craig had to leave successful careers to pursue this dream. To the co-founders of Boys to Men, leaving their success life behind was a small sacrifice knowing that their work would make a difference. In today’s world, American children are born into a society with divorce rates over 50 percent. To top this off more than 40 percent of families are run by a single parent. Today’s norm makes it necessary for boys to receive guidance and support. Providing a positive role model will help young men to make mature choices.
What is Boys to Men exactly? Think of it as the Boy Scouts, Big Brothers, and Outward Bound combined. The boys and their mentors spend more time together on a single weekend retreat than most typical mentor programs provide in six months. The weekend is a right of passage for young men that challenge them spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Through their program, they have taught many that the real gold is not gained by serving yourself but by serving others. By the end of the weekend, the young men have built trust, respect and a close relationship with their mentors.
