Marberry Ben Acree, 60, was killed in a bicycle accident in San Diego after he was struck by a box truck the morning of February 5, 2011. According to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office, Acree was riding a bike east on Friars Road near the Interstate 15 off-ramp when he collided with a box truck that was exiting the freeway. The truck pulled over. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Marberry Ben Acree for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep this grieving family in your thoughts and prayers.

San Diego Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), three people were killed and 512 were injured in San Diego bicycle accidents. During the same year, there were seven fatalities and 959 injuries reported as a result of bicycle accidents in San Diego County.

What Caused This Tragic Bicycle Accident?

Not many details about this fatal bicycle versus truck accident have been released yet. There are several unanswered questions here. Was the bicyclist on the shoulder or in the lane of traffic? Did the truck veer out of a lane of traffic and strike the bicyclist? Was the box truck driver speeding, distracted or fatigued? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway, which may have caused or contributed to this fatal accident? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine what occurred here and why.

A man was seriously injured in a bicycle accident in Fullerton after being hit by an OCTA bus the evening of January 26, 2011. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the major injury bus accident occurred on Euclid Street at West Laguna Road. Fullerton police officials say the man, who was riding a mountain bike, tried to cross Euclid Street at Laguna Road and was hit by a small OCTA bus that was traveling north on the roadway.

The bicyclist, a man in his 60s, was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. Anyone who witnessed this bus versus bicycle accident is asked contact Fullerton police at 714-738-6715.

Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person died and 69 were injured in bicycle accidents in Fullerton. In Orange County as a whole, 10 deaths and 1,087 injuries were reported involving bicycle accidents in 2008. Also during the same year, 152 people were killed and 13,414 were injured as a result of Orange County car accident.

Rene Ambriz, 20, was killed in a Ventura car accident while riding his bicycle across the street. According to a news report in The Ventura County Star, the fatal bicycle accident occurred the evening of November 13, 2010 at the intersection of Ventura Road and West Hemlock Street in Oxnard. Police say Ambriz was riding his bicycle across Ventura Road when he was struck by a minivan driven by 42-year-old Paul Castaneda. Police also suspect Ambriz was crossing the street against a red light. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the car accident. An investigation is ongoing.

An 11-year-old boy was critically injured in an Orange County car accident when he was struck by a van while riding his bike. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the serious injury bicycle accident occurred at the intersection of Brookdale Lane and Sunridge Drive in Huntington Beach the morning of November 5, 2010. Police report that the boy was struck by a 1970 Volkswagen van when he tried to cross the street. The young victim of this car accident sustained major head injuries despite wearing a helmet. Police are looking for witnesses to this car accident. An investigation is ongoing.

Two bicyclists sustained major injuries in an Orange County car accident after, officials say, they were struck by a suspected drunk driver on the afternoon of October 23, 2010. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the DUI car accident occurred at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach, when 24-year-old Tama Rae Tracy hit the two cyclists with her black Mercedes and then left the scene.

A bicycle accident at a street intersection in Irvine the morning of September 8, 2010, resulted in injuries to the cyclist. The Orange County Register reports that the collision happened at the intersection of Daybreak and Blue Lake North when the bicyclist was hit by a Chevrolet pickup truck. It is not clear how badly the bicyclist was hurt. Officials are investigating the cause of this accident.

I hope the bicyclist did not sustain catastrophic injuries in this collision. I pray that this victim recovers quickly and completely.

Julie Farris suffered severe brain injury after being struck by a trolley on the Azusa Pacific University Campus in the City of Azusa, California. At the time of the accident, Julie was riding her bicycle on the 800 Block of East Foothill Boulevard, the main roadway that links the East and West campuses.

The 800 Block was, and had been for some time, in dangerous condition. Many students struggled to travel this road numerous times a day, and were forced to weave around parked cars and congested traffic within the small usable space of the roadway. At the time of the accident, Julie had to ride her bike on the opposite side of the road, against traffic, because of the complete disorganization and lack of space on the side that went with the flow of traffic. It was at this point that she was struck by the trolley.

Four people were injured in a Calabasas personal injury accident due to an elderly driver. The intersection accident occurred when an 81-year old woman made a left turn in her Audi A4 and collided with Four bicyclists, according to a Los Angeles Times news report. The accident occurred while the elderly driver was traveling westbound on Mulholland Highway approaching Stokes Canyon Road at 7:30 a.m. Three of the riders suffered critical injuries while the forth received minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

A man who died nearly two weeks after he was involved in a bicycle accident in Newport Beach has been identified as 65-year-old Dan Crain. The Orange County Register reports that the Irvine man was riding his bike the night of August 3, 2010, southbound on Newport Coast Drive, when a car merged on to the roadway from the 73 Toll Road and struck him. The car’s driver was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting the bicyclist. Crain went through several spinal surgeries, but died August 15, 2010.

My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Dan Crain. By all accounts, Crain was a much-loved personality in his community and an experienced, avid bicyclist. His loved ones will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Authorities in Gardena are looking for a hit-and-run driver, who they say, struck and killed 31-year-old bicyclist Jennifer Costlow, the night of August 13, 2010. The fatal crash claimed the life of Costlow, who was four months pregnant at the time. She was riding a bike with her boyfriend down Normandie Avenue, near Gardena Boulevard, when a dark-colored two-door sedan struck her and took off. No other suspect or vehicle description is available. Anyone with information is asked to call 310-217-6135. I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Jennifer Costlow for their devastating loss. What kind of a person would leave a pregnant woman wounded to die on the roadway?
