A bicycle accident in Petaluma resulted in serious injuries for a 50-year-old man the morning of July 23. KTVU News reports that the man was riding his bike on the shoulder of the Highway 101 near Kastania Road when he was struck by a van that drifted from traffic lanes on to the shoulder. Officials are still trying to determine what caused the driver of the GMC van, 63-year-old Nicolay Pokornyy, to drift over to the shoulder. The bicyclist was taken to a regional medical center with serious injuries.

My heart goes out to this injured bicyclist and his family. I hope he has not sustained major injuries and pray that he makes a speedy and complete recovery.

Many major cities have dedicated bicycle lanes where cyclists are encouraged to ride. Motor Vehicle Code 21208 demands that riders stay inside the lanes when they are available. There have been many discussions on the importance of bike lanes, and whether they really do promote safe travel. We always encourage you to obey the traffic laws and ride in bike lanes when they are available. It is always a good idea, though, to keep in mind some of the reasons behind bike lanes, as well as some of their pitfalls.

A bicyclist was injured in a San Francisco car accident after he was struck by a Municipal Railway streetcar. CBS News reports that the injury collision occurred the night of June 2, 2010 at the corner of Market and 7th streets. The injured bicyclist was taken to a nearby medical center. The extent of his injuries is not know.

A bicycle accident near the CSU Sacramento campus the morning of May 2, 2010 left a man in his 40s fatally injured. News10 reports that the fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Carlson Drive and H Street when the bicycle was hit by a minivan. The man on the bicycle sustained severe injuries and died at the scene. The female driver of the minivan was not hurt. An investigation is ongoing.

Peter Webster, 60, was killed in an Oakland car accident after he was struck while riding a bicycle at a city intersection. According to a news report in the Oakland Tribune, Webster was riding at the intersection of 52nd and Market streets the evening of April 30, 2010 when he was hit by a Buick driven by a 36-year-old man. The Buick was traveling west on 52nd Street at the time and Webster was riding his bike south on Market Street. Webster was thrown to the pavement and was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. He died a few hours after the collision. Police are asking anyone who witnessed this accident to call Oakland police at 510-777-8553.

Jesus Esparza Delgado, 65, was critically injured in a Ventura car accident after his bicycle was hit by a vehicle, whose driver then fled the scene. According to a news report in the Ventura County Star, the major injury collision occurred when Delgado was riding his bike south on Nardo Street in Saticoy, the afternoon of April 26, 2010. A driver heading north on Nardo turned left and struck Delgado who was in the crosswalk at Wells Road. California Highway Patrol officials said the impact from the collision threw Delgado into the car’s window and then into the roadway. He was apparently not wearing a helmet.

Annette Ferrin-Rodgers, 49, was killed in an Orange County car accident after she was struck by a bus while riding her bicycle at the intersection of Beach and La Habra boulevards, in La Habra. According to a news report in Whittier Daily News, Ferrin-Rodgers was in the crosswalk when a Foothill Transit bus that was making a left turn on La Habra, the evening of April 20, 2010, hit her. There were no passengers in the bus. The driver apparently told officials that he saw “something” in the crosswalk, but it was too late to stop. Ferrin-Rodgers died at the scene.

A bicyclist sustained injuries in a San Diego car accident after he was struck by a minivan. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the collision occurred in the 2700 block of Kurtz Street the morning of April 14, 2010. The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The collision reportedly occurred in the Midway District of San Diego. Police are investigating the incident.

A Newport Beach car accident that occurred the morning of December 9, 2009 has injured a bicyclist, according to The Orange County Register. The accident was reportedly caused by a hit-and-run driver near the street intersection of Jamboree Road and Bison Avenue. The bicycle rider, who was identified only as a man in his mid-40s, has been transported to a local trauma unit, shortly after the bicycle-car collision. The woman motorist involved in this injury crash has since been located by Newport Beach police and arrested for fleeing the scene of the accident. It is not known yet, if other charges have been filed, as the investigation is ongoing.
