A child suffered facial injuries after being struck by a large metal object on the 57 Freeway. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident occurred the afternoon of November 19, 2016 on the southbound 57 Freeway south of Katella Avenue in Anaheim. California Highway Patrol officials say Kathleen Hawks was driving a Hyundai sedan with her son riding in the front passenger seat when a second vehicle struck the metal object, which was in the roadway, and “launched” it toward her car.

The metal object smashed through the Hawks’ windshield and struck the boy in his face, causing injuries that were later treated at an area trauma center. Four people including two young children were seriously injured in a two-vehicle car accident in South Los Angeles. According to a City News Service report, the incident occurred the afternoon of November 17, 2016 in the 300 block of West 108th Street. Two girls, one 8 months old and another about 3 years old, were ejected from the vehicle. The children, and a man and a woman, were all seriously injured and transported to an area hospital. One person was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Nine people were injured, four seriously, in an Irvine car accident after an 81-year-old Dana Point man crashed through a fence, struck two cars and plowed into several pedestrians at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater the night of September 3, 2016. According to a KABC news report, the incident occurred in the 8800 block of Irvine Center Drive near the box office right before the start of a concert at the popular venue.

Officials said the elderly man, whom they later identified as Joon Kyu Kim, drove through the parking lot near the entrance and suddenly hit a fence and several pedestrians. He then hit an unoccupied, parked police car pushing it into a grassy area where people were picnicking. Several people were injured and treated for their injuries. None of the injuries are believed to be life threatening. It was unclear what caused the crash. Police have ruled out the involvement of alcohol or drugs. No citations or arrests were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

At least five people were injured in a Los Angeles crash when a dump truck collided with a Metro bus. According to an NBC Los Angeles news report, the incident occurred the morning of August 31, 2016 next to the 405 Freeway on Jefferson Boulevard. The Metro Transit Authority bus was traveling east on Jefferson Boulevard. A dump truck carrying gravel was driving off of the northbound off ramp of the 405 Freeway when it struck the bus. There were six people on the bus including the driver when the crash occurred.

Four people were transported to the hospital. Two of the four people transported, the truck driver and a bus passenger were classified as “immediate,” which means they required medical attention right away. California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. The traffic signal appeared to have been working after the crash. So, it is not clear if the collision was the result of a mechanical problem or the truck driver’s error.

One person was killed and 11 others were injured when a car plowed into a house in the Harbor Gateway area of Los Angeles. According to a City News Service report, the fatal crash occurred the night of July 27, 2016 at 14837 South Orchard Avenue. At least one of the victims was trapped inside the home for some time. One person was killed. Ten other women and a man ranging in age from their 40s to 80s were taken to area hospitals. There is no information regarding the seriousness of their injuries. We also don’t know how many people were in the house at the time the car plowed into it. Officials are still investigating the cause of the accident.

A 58-year-old man was killed in a Los Angeles bicycle accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to an NBC4 news report, the incident occurred the night of June 21, 2016 in the 100 block of North Crescent Heights Boulevard in Beverly Grove. Police said the bicyclist who was riding on First Street was struck by a vehicle at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Crescent Heights Boulevard.

The bicyclist was thrown 75 feet due to the impact. The female driver fled the scene. The bicyclist was hit by another car, but that driver stopped and will not face any charges. The hit-and-run driver also struck another vehicle about a block away from the fatal crash. The driver is believed to have abandoned the red Ford SUV after the second crash. A detailed description of the driver was not available. The investigation is ongoing.

Kenoa Stewart, 36, was killed in a car accident in Hacienda Heights early morning on June 2, 2016 after her vehicle became wedged under the back of a big rig on the 60 Freeway. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the crash occurred on the eastbound 60 Freeway just east of Seventh Avenue. California Highway Patrol officials said the woman was driving a 2002 Saturn L100 east in the number three lane.

A 2009 Volvo big rig was traveling directly in front of her. Officials say the Saturn went out of control and became wedged underneath the right rear of the semi-trailer, between the number three and number four lanes. Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the big rig, a 57-year-old man from La Puente, was uninjured. The crash remains under investigation. Continue reading →

Ching Fong Liu, 82, was killed in a car accident in La Habra the night of May 19, 2016. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Arbolita Drive. Officers responding to the scene reported that two women and two children were injured. One of the women, Liu, died from her injuries later. Robert Telles Jr., 25, a U.S. Marine was killed in a rollover crash in Orange the morning of May 4, 2016. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal rollover crash occurred on the northbound 57 Freeway near the Chapman Avenue exit. California Highway Patrol officials said Telles was driving a 1991 Honda CR-X at about 65 mph when he swerved from the middle lane and crashed into the concrete railing near Chapman Avenue. The vehicle rolled over and landed on its roof. Telles was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 63-year-old grandmother was killed and five others were injured, including three of the woman’s grandchildren, in a multi-vehicle car accident in Valley Glen. According to an NBC Los Angeles news report, the fatal accident occurred the afternoon of May 1, 2016 in the 12700 block of Vanowen Street. Police said a white 2011 BMW tried to pass a silver Ford Mustang that was traveling westbound. The BMW clipped the Mustang whose driver lost control of the vehicle and then hit a pickup truck.
