David Sanders, 30, of San Bernardino was killed in an El Monte car accident and two Caltrans workers suffered injuries after Sanders’ minivan rear-ended a work truck. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal car crash occurred the morning of July 24, 2012 on the westbound 10 Freeway east of Peck Road. Sanders was driving his 2002 Ford Windstar van west on the 10 in a lane that was closed due to construction. A Caltrans utility truck that was carrying two contractors was going in reverse in the same lane. One worker was sitting in the back of the truck picking up orange construction cones. The van rear-ended the truck.

Sanders and his dog died at the scene. The two injured Caltrans workers were transported to a local hospital. They were both employees of Atkins Construction, which is based in Foothill Ranch. This crash has occurred barely two days after another collision involving two drunk drivers that killed two road workers on the 405 Freeway in Torrance.

A man suffered critical injuries in a Seal Beach car accident after a vehicle crashed into the bus bench on which he was sitting. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the major injury crash occurred the night of July 23, 2012. The vehicle drove into a bench inside a bus shelter on Seal Beach Boulevard just north of Pacific Coast Highway.

The victim was trapped in the debris of the collapsed bus shelter. Police say he was sitting on the bench just before the vehicle crashed into it. The victim was transported to an area trauma center where he has been listed in critical condition. The driver stopped at the scene and talked to officials, but it is not clear why the crash occurred. Officials do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved. Ramon Lopez, 56, of Chino Hills and Ricardo Zamora, 58, of Winchester, were fatally injured in a Torrance car accident that involved two suspected drunk drivers. According to a CBS news article, the freeway crash occurred early morning on July 22, 2012 on the 405 Freeway near Artesia Boulevard in Torrance. California Highway Patrol officials say Zamora, Lopez and another worker were doing asphalt work in the northbound freeway’s far right lane when a Lexus SUV struck them. The Lexus crashed into the men after it was rear-ended by a Ford Explorer SUV.

Lopez and Zamora died at the scene. A third worker was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as “minor to moderate.” The driver of the Explorer, 23-year-old Yocio Gomez, was arrested on DUI charges as was the driver of the Lexus, 43-year-old Stephen Caserta. Officials say the construction zone on the freeway was well-lit and was marked by cones.

A man was injured in an Orange County car accident, which officials say, was caused by another vehicle making an unsafe lane change. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury crash occurred on the 5 Freeway at the 22 Freeway where it enters the Orange Crush the morning of July 19, 2012. California Highway Patrol officials said that a Chevrolet sedan made an unsafe lane change, forcing the rider on a Harley-Davidson into the side of a Toyota Corolla. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

At least one person was injured in a car accident in Anaheim that involved three vehicles. According to The Orange County Register, the injury crash occurred the afternoon of July 18, 2012 on the 91 Freeway at the Imperial Highway on-ramp. California Highway Patrol officials said the collision involved a red Jeep Liberty with four occupants, a Hyundai Sonata with a solo female driver and an Acura RSX-S with a solo male driver. One of the vehicles overturned and at least one person was transported to a nearby hospital. Officials are still investigating the cause of this accident.

Five people were injured in a Laguna Hills car accident, which officials say involved several vehicles. According to a news article in The Orange County Register, the injury crash occurred the morning of July 17, 2012 on the Interstate-5 at the Alicia Parkway on-ramp. California Highway Patrol officials say a silver Toyota pickup truck was one of the first involved in a chain-reaction collision on the southbound 5 Freeway. The pickup rolled over several times before coming to rest on the right shoulder. Firefighters treated five people at the scene, four of whom were transported to an area hospital. A total of four vehicles were involved. An investigation is ongoing.

Daniel Iglesias, 19, was killed in a car accident in Santa Ana after the vehicle in which he was a passenger was involved in a two-car collision. According to The Orange County Register, the incident occurred the afternoon of July 15, 2012. Officials say Iglesias was the sole passenger in a Pontiac Trans Am that collided with a full-sized SUV on McFadden Avenue after the driver of the Pontiac swerved to avoid hitting a white minivan. The minivan did not remain at the scene after the crash. The SUV smashed through the right passenger side of the Pontiac fatally injuring Iglesias. The Pontiac’s driver was transported to an area hospital.

Possible Non-Contact Hit-and-Run

An elderly female passenger in the SUV was also taken to a local hospital with complaints of pain. Three others in the SUV were uninjured. Witnesses told officials that the white minivan was traveling north on Pacific Avenue, which dead-ends at McFadden with a stop sign. When the minivan entered McFadden, the Pontiac swerved to avoid it. The Pontiac then crossed into opposing lanes of traffic and was hit by the eastbound SUV. Police are searching for the driver of the white minivan. Anyone with information is asked to contact Santa Ana police at 714-245-8665.

Manhattan Beach Police Officer Tony Presgraves was seriously injured in a Los Angeles County car accident when a Honda SUV collided with his patrol car. According to a news report in The Daily Breeze, the injury crash occurred at the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Ninth Street the night of July 11, 2012. Presgraves was driving north on Sepulveda when his cruiser collided with an SUV driven by a 24-year-old woman. Witnesses have stated that Officer Presgraves appeared to be speeding and broadsided the Honda SUV as it was making a left turn. Presgraves and the SUV’s driver were transported to an area hospital for treatment. Presgraves was in serious but stable condition.

Three people were injured in a street intersection car collision in Garden Grove involving two vehicles. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury crash occurred at the intersection of West Street and Orangewood Avenue, the morning of July 12, 2012. Police say, the driver of a Suzuki Aerio was heading west on Orangewood Avenue and entered the intersection on a red light.

The Suzuki collided with a Mitsubishi Lancer that was traveling north on West Street. The impact of the collision caused the Lancer to roll over. A man and a woman in the Lancer were transported to a trauma center as was a boy in the vehicle, who officials say, was not injured, but “traumatized by the incident.” A female passenger in the Suzuki was also transported to an area hospital. The investigation is ongoing.

Lourdes Jauregui, 39, of Cathedral City, was killed in a pedestrian collision, which officials say involved a suspected drunk driver. According to a CBS news report, the fatal DUI collision occurred near the intersection of Converse Road and Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City, early morning on July 7, 2012. Police say the vehicle that struck Jauregui was driven by James Coley, 49, of Newport Beach. Coley showed signs of intoxication and was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. The investigation is ongoing.
