Gabriel Pomona, 36, a U.S. Forest Service fire captain, was killed in a San Bernardino car accident after a pickup truck making a left turn struck his motorcycle at a street intersection. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the fatal motorcycle accident occurred the evening of February 11, 2011 at the intersection of North Shore Drive and Tinkerbell Avenue in Big Bear. Officials say the pickup truck driver turned in front of the oncoming motorcycle. An investigation is ongoing.

I offer my deepest sympathies to Gabriel Pomona’s wife, Summer, his other family members and friends. Pomona had apparently been a crew captain for the Big Bear Hotshots since 2008. He was also involved with the community and participated in Christmas bike drives for Inland Empire children. This is certainly a tragic loss! Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but two injuries in the Big Bear Lake area due to motorcycle accidents. In San Bernardino County as a whole, 34 people died and 532 were injured in motorcycle accidents during the same year.

A police officer was injured in a San Francisco area car accident after his motorcycle was rear-ended by another vehicle the evening of February 1, 2011. According to a report in the San Jose Mercury News, the motorcycle accident occurred at the intersection of San Pablo Avenue and 43rd Street in Emeryville. The officer was stopped at the intersection while pedestrians crossed the street. At that moment a northbound vehicle failed to stop and struck him from behind. The officer was transported to an area hospital, but his injuries are not considered to be life threatening. Police say the motorist failed to even slow down while approaching the intersection. An investigation is ongoing.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured police officer following this Emeryville motorcycle accident. I wish him a complete and speedy recovery from his injuries.

James Renshaw, 48, was injured in a Ventura car accident after his motorcycle was struck by a teen driver, who officials say turned left in front of Renshaw. According to a news report in the Ventura County Star, the serious injury motorcycle accident occurred at the intersection of Baldwin Road and Highway 33 in Ojai the night of January 11, 2011. Renshaw was headed southbound on Highway 33 on his motorcycle when a car driven by 17-year-old Whitney Cooke hit him. Renshaw suffered critical injuries when he was thrown to the ground. Police believe that Cooke made a left turn against a red arrow.

A police officer and a driver were injured in a Huntington Beach car accident when the officer’s motorcycle and a car collided at a street intersection. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury motorcycle accident occurred at the intersection of Brookhurst Street and Adams Avenue the night of January 1, 2011. The Irvine police officer and the driver of a 2005 Mercedes sustained moderate injuries when their vehicles collided. An investigation is ongoing.

Jose Campos, 24, was killed in a Fresno area car accident when his motorcycle crashed into another vehicle at a street intersection. According to a news report in the Tulare Advance-Register, the fatal motorcycle accident occurred at the intersection of Road 156 and Avenue 328 in Tulare County the afternoon of December 12, 2010. Police say the driver of a 1996 Saturn was traveling south on Road 156 when the vehicle was broadsided by the motorcyclist who was eastbound on Avenue 328. Campos was thrown off his motorcycle. He was taken to a Fresno hospital where he died from his injuries.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Jose Campos. My thoughts and prayers are with them following this tragic motorcycle accident.

Motorcycle Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), eight people were killed and 61 were injured as a result of motorcycle accidents in the unincorporated areas of Tulare County. During the same year, there were 10 fatalities and 98 injuries reported as a result of motorcycle accidents in Tulare County.

Right-of-Way Issues

It is unclear from this report if the motorist will be cited for the accident. Police say the car driver stopped before pulling into the intersection. Investigators will have to determine if the driver failed to yield right-of-way or failed to see the motorcycle approaching. I trust officials are also looking into whether the driver was impaired, distracted or otherwise negligent at the time.

Kenneth Brant, 61, was killed in an Orange County car accident after his motorcycle was struck head-on by another vehicle. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal motorcycle accident occurred on the Ortega Highway near Lake Elsinore, the morning of November 28, 2010. Brant was travelling east on the highway when a 1980 BMW heading west hit him head-on.

Brant died from his injuries. The driver of the BMW, who has not been identified, also suffered injuries. California Highway Patrol officials are considering filing manslaughter charges against him. Investigators say drugs or alcohol do not seem to be involved, but are not sure what caused the driver of the BMW to cross over into opposing lanes of traffic.

A motorcyclist was severely injured in a San Diego car accident after an elderly driver attempted to turn ahead of him. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the motorcyclist was traveling north on Waring Road at Orcutt Avenue the afternoon of November 17, 2010. It was then, police say, a 90-year-old driver in a Toyota made as unsafe left turn and entered into the path of the oncoming motorcycle.

A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a San Diego car accident involving an AT&T utility truck. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the injury motorcycle accident occurred on State Route 78 near Julian, the morning of November 16, 2010. The motorcycle was travelling on the steep and winding roadway when it crashed head-on into the utility truck. The motorcyclist sustained major injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. It is unclear at this time if the truck was in motion or if it was parked.

A police officer was injured in an Orange County car accident after her motorcycle was struck by a driver who was making a right turn at an intersection. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury motorcycle accident occurred the afternoon of October 26, 2010 at the intersection of Main and 15th streets in Santa Ana.

Police say that a government car driven by a male IRS agent made a right turn ahead of the officer, from 15th onto Main, causing the motorcyclist to broadside the vehicle. The officer sustained several injuries to her back and wrist as well as broken teeth. She is said to be in serious but stable condition. The driver apparently had a stop sign, but the officer, who was riding on Main Street did not. An investigation is ongoing.
