According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of Church Street and Terra Vista Parkway in Rancho Cucamonga, the morning of October 10, 2011. Arugay was walking in a crosswalk when a Ford F-150 pickup hit her. Arugay was transported to a nearby hospital where she died from her injuries. Two pedestrians, a man and a woman, were killed in an Anaheim car accident, near the Disneyland Resort, which officials say, involved an underage drunk driver. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal DUI collision occurred at a crosswalk on South Harbor Boulevard, the early morning of October 1, 2011. The driver of a Chevrolet Astro van hit the two pedestrians as they crossed the road in a crosswalk. A male teenager, whose age was given as under 18, told police he was driving the van. Both victims were fatally injured in the crash. Alcohol has been described as a factor in this collision.

Three sisters, ages 5, 10 and 16, suffered serious injuries in a Los Angeles car accident after they were struck by a vehicle while walking to school. According to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the major injury collision occurred in the 1400 block of West Temple Street in Echo Park, the morning of September 27, 2011. The girls were walking in a marked crosswalk while heading to a nearby elementary school, which the two younger girls attend. The driver who hit them was apparently a parent who had dropped off her own child at school. She told officials she did not see the girls in the crosswalk. All three victims were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the pedestrian accident occurred near the intersection of Pomona and Chapman avenues in Fullerton, the morning of September 8, 2011. The two cars struck each other at the intersection and one or both of them hit the two students who were walking to their school. The young victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of Crone Avenue and Loara Street in Anaheim, the morning of September 6, 2011. The woman was crossing the road when a Toyota Corolla making a left turn struck her. The woman was taken to UCI Medical Center with unknown injuries. The driver told officials that the rising sun had temporarily blinded her. It is not clear if the driver of the Toyota will face charges.

Esmeralda Ramirez, 24, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident involving a suspected drunk driver, the afternoon of August 14, 2011. According to news reports, the fatal DUI collision occurred at the intersection of Stewart Avenue and Baldwin Park Boulevard in Baldwin Park. The woman was walking with her boyfriend to church, when a 2005 Jeep Laredo driven by 27-year-old Rafael Espinoza Moreno went out of control and struck Ramirez. The Jeep then crashed into a bus bench and another building.

Moreno fled the scene of the crash, but was soon found by officials a couple of blocks away, hiding in bushes. Moreno’s blood alcohol level was more than twice the limit of 0.08 percent when he was tested after the crash. Police say he has never had a valid driver’s license and has received prior citations for speeding and driving without a license. He now faces drunk driving, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter charges.
