Ruth Brown, 96, of Costa Mesa, was killed in a Huntington Beach car accident involving five vehicles. According to a City News Service report, the fatal car crash occurred at the intersection of Adams Avenue and Bushard Street, the morning of October 7, 2011. Officials say a 2005 Mercedes-Benz stalled in traffic and three vehicles came to a stop behind it. It was then that a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor slammed into the back of the row of stopped cars. Six people were hospitalized in the chain reaction crash. The fatally injured woman was a passenger in a 2005 Toyota. It is unclear why the driver of the Mitsubishi was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision. An investigation is ongoing.

Four people were injured in a Huntington Beach car accident, which officials say, involved a Chevy Silverado and a Chevy Suburban, the morning of October 6, 2011. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the car crash occurred at the intersection of Heil Avenue and Edwards Street. The driver of the Silverado pickup truck, traveling eastbound on Heil, attempted a left turn when the two vehicles collided. Three occupants of the Suburban and the driver of the Silverado were hospitalized following the crash. The extent of their injuries is not known. An investigation is ongoing.

A woman was killed and two others were injured in a Whittier car accident that involved three vehicles. According to a report in The Whittier Daily News, the fatal car crash occurred at the intersection of Mulberry Drive and Greenleaf Avenue in Whittier, the night of October 4, 2011. Officials say the collision occurred when one of the drivers made a left turn in front of another vehicle. A female driver died shortly after the crash at a nearby hospital. Gilani Taylor, 27, suffered life-threatening injuries and her 9-year-old daughter was killed in a Los Angeles car accident involving a hit-and-run driver. According to a KTLA news report, the fatal hit-and-run accident occurred on the 101 Freeway near Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas, the morning of October 1, 2011. A witness to the fatal crash, who was driving behind Taylor, stated that a white SUV sideswiped Taylor’s Chrysler sedan. The Chrysler then crashed into the center divider and slid on its roof before catching on fire. With the help of several Good Samaritans, Taylor was able to escape her burning vehicle, but they could not rescue her 9-year-old daughter. The girl died from her injuries. Taylor was critically injured and is on a respirator.

A motorcyclist was injured in an Orange County car accident after he was hit by a vehicle, the morning of October 3, 2011. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the motorcycle accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of the 22 Freeway at Fairview Street in Orange. California Highway Patrol officials say the driver of a Mercury Mariner SUV merged from the carpool lane of the freeway and entered into the path of a man riding a Yamaha R6 motorcycle. The motorcyclist then swerved to avoid being hit by the SUV, but ended up crashing into the back of a Chevy Silverado pickup that had stopped in traffic lanes. The motorcyclist was transported to an area hospital for treatment. An investigation is ongoing.

Veronica Castro, 26, was injured in a Los Angeles car accident after another vehicle struck her Ford Mustang at a street intersection. According to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the injury collision occurred at the intersection of Burbank Boulevard and De Soto Avenue, in Woodland Hills, on September 22, 2011. Officials say Castro was driving southbound on De Soto Avenue and turning left onto Burbank Boulevard, when a northbound Honda struck the rear of her car. The impact sheared the Mustang in two. Castro was injured, as was the driver of the Honda. They were both transported to an area hospital, and are expected to survive.

Two Fullerton Union High School students were injured in an Orange County car accident after two vehicles collided and careened into them as they crossed the street. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the pedestrian accident occurred near the intersection of Pomona and Chapman avenues in Fullerton, the morning of September 8, 2011. The two cars struck each other at the intersection and one or both of them hit the two students who were walking to their school. The young victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. At least one person was injured in a Riverside car accident involving three vehicles, which officials say, was caused by a tire blowout. According to a news report in The Desert Sun, the injury car accident involved a big rig, a small car and a pickup truck. California Highway Patrol officials say the accident occurred the afternoon of March 3, 2011 on the 10 Freeway near the Monterey Avenue exit in Thousand Palms. One person was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. At least one other person had to be extricated from a vehicle, but it does not appear that the individual was injured. An investigation is ongoing.

Given the nature of this car accident, it is indeed fortunate that no one was catastrophically injured or killed. I wish the injured victim the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

According to CHP’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 121 fatalities and 2,615 injuries involving car accidents in the unincorporated areas of Riverside County. Countywide, car accidents claimed 220 lives and injured 8,561 people during the same year.
