Sgt. Dave Welch of the Rohnert Park Police Department was injured in a car accident the morning of September 5, 2010, which officials say, was caused by a suspected drunk driver. According to a Bay City News report, the injury crash occurred when 27-year-old Joshua Hicks, who was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control of his vehicle and crashed head-on into a police SUV. Hicks attempted to leave the scene of the crash, but Sgt. Welch used the SUV to push Hicks’ vehicle against the curb. Hicks was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Initial tests showed that he had a blood alcohol level of 0.16 percent — which is over twice the legal limit. Sgt. Welch suffered injuries to his arm, back and shoulder.

My heart goes out to this police officer. I hope his injuries are not severe and pray for his speedy and complete recovery. I’m glad that he was able to stop the driver, who was apparently intoxicated and uncooperative to officials, from getting back on the road and possibly injuring others.

A car accident in Los Angeles left two people injured in Baldwin Park the morning of August 30, 2010. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the collision happened in the westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway near Puente Avenue when a Foothill Transit bus hit a 2008 Nissan Altima, which then collided with a Jeep Cherokee. Investigators are looking into whether an unsafe lane change on the part of the bus driver or the driver of a Dodge Ram caused this collision. A passenger on the bus and the driver of the Nissan suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

It is indeed fortunate that no one was seriously injured in this crash. I wish the injured victims and speedy and full recovery. They will be in my prayers.

There has been some concern recently that the Attorney General’s office has not been aggressively prosecuting elder abuse cases. The San Francisco Examiner reports that prosecution of abuse cases are down under this particular administration from that of the previous Attorney General. In defense of the allegation, Attorney General Brown’s office states that the fewer prosecutions are due to the fact that the previous prosecutions had been successful in clearing up a good bit of the abuse problem. They are now concentrating on fraud cases against the MediCal system and saving the State some money.
