Three people were injured, one seriously, after a car plowed into a crowded restaurant in Perris the afternoon of November 24, 2013. According to a news report on CBS Los Angeles, the injury crash occurred at the Sol y Mar Mexican Grill in the 2900 block of Perris Boulevard. One diner suffered major injuries and two others who were hit suffered minor to moderate injuries. All three were transported to the hospital. Police say the 19-year-old driver, later identified as Mario Balverde, was trying to leave the parking lot when he lost control of the vehicle. He was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony DUI resulting in injuries.

Former NFL linebacker Thomas Howard suffered fatal injuries in a car crash in Alameda, California. According to a news report in the San Jose Mercury News, the fiery crash occurred early morning on November 18, 2013 on the Interstate 880 in Oakland. California Highway Patrol officials say Howard was driving his BMW northbound at speeds as high as 110 mph when he hit the back of a big rig he was swerving to miss.

A young mother, her boyfriend and her 2-year-old daughter were killed in a Fontana car crash when a driver rammed into their stopped car near a street intersection. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the collision occurred the night of October 21, 2013 near the intersection of Citrus Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. The deceased were identified as Helen Amaya, her boyfriend Shawn Scott and Amaya’s 2-year-old daughter.

Paul Michelena, 46, was killed in a San Clemente car accident after a driver who was turning into a parking lot struck him. The Orange County Register reports that Michelena and his daughter were walking on a sidewalk in front of a Ralphs supermarket at South El Camino Real and Avenida Barcelona the afternoon of October 11, 2013 when they were struck by a Ford F150 pickup truck that was turning into the store’s parking lot. Police say the driver said he did not see the pedestrians on the sidewalk. Michelena was pronounced dead at the scene and the girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No arrests or citations were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

I offer my deepest condolences to Michelena’s family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are also with his daughter who was injured in this collision.

Two people have been killed and two others were seriously injured after being struck by vehicles in Santa Ana within the past week. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, 68-year-old Petra Perez Jimenez died from injuries sustained on October 11, 2013 when she was struck by a Toyota Camry at the intersection of Grant Street and Standard Avenue. Jimenez was pushing a shopping cart in a marked crosswalk when the northbound vehicle hit her. The driver of the Camry, who was driving without a license, remained at the scene. No charges have been filed yet.

A driver identified as 57-year-old Adrian Davis was killed and several others were injured in a Fullerton crash that involved eight vehicles. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the fatal crash occurred the afternoon of October 10, 2013 near the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Valencia Mesa Drive. Police say Davis, who was driving a yellow Ford F-150 pickup truck, was traveling in the wrong direction when he swerved into lanes on Harbor and struck several vehicles that were stopped at a signal. Davis died from his injuries. Five others were injured, but the nature and extent of their injuries is not known.

Drunk driving crashes are an epidemic in Orange County and California – even more so in the summer. According to California Office of Traffic Safety, 10 Orange County cities rank among the worst statewide for rates of injuries and fatalities caused by driving under the influence. Of all the cities in the state with a population of 100,000 to 250,000, the city of Orange ranks number one for drunk driving collisions and fatalities. Newport Beach ranks number one for DUI crashes among cities with a population between 50,000 and 100,000. Santa Ana ranks third and Anaheim is at number 10 for worst cities with populations greater than 250,000.

Summer vacation for many is a time to relax and rejuvenate. However, it is also a hectic time when most families choose to travel. Americans tend to try and pack in as much into a short time as possible. This is also true of road trips. If you are driving on your vacation this summer and have a number of destinations and activities planned, at some point, you may find yourself driving while sleepy or drowsy. Many motorists try to drive late at night to avoid congestion on long road trips. This is asking for trouble because it is when a number of drivers tire themselves out. Traffic safety experts have recognized that driving while drowsy is just as dangerous and risky as driving under the influence.

Hang Vu, 60, died from injuries she sustained in a Westminster car crash after a vehicle struck her at the parking lot of a supermarket. The Orange County Register reports that the fatal pedestrian collision occurred the morning of May 13, 2013 in the parking lot of the A Dong Supermarket at 9221 Bolsa Avenue in Westminster. Police and paramedics arrived at the scene and found two female pedestrians were injured as a result of the crash.
