A man in his 30s was killed in a Los Angeles car accident when his Honda Civic veered off the roadway and crashed. According to a report in The Pasadena Star-News, the fatal car accident occurred on the eastbound 91 Freeway near Pioneer Boulevard in Artesia early morning on May 3, 2011. The Honda was travelling in the fast lane before it veered right across all lanes of traffic, went up an embankment and crashed into a sound barrier wall. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. It is not clear why he lost control of his vehicle or if any other vehicles were involved.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the driver killed in this tragic single-vehicle car accident. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person as killed and 87 were injured in Artesia car accidents. During that same year, 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries occurred due to Los Angeles County car accidents.
What Caused This Fatal Car Accident?
It is unclear what may have caused this tragic accident. There are several unanswered questions at the moment. Was there an auto defect or mechanical malfunction, which may have caused the driver to lose control? Was there a dangerous roadway condition? Were any other vehicles involved in this crash? For example, was the driver of the Honda cut off by another vehicle or forced off the roadway by another vehicle? Was this accident the result of driver error? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here.
Liability Issues
If this accident was caused by an auto product defect, the auto maker or the manufacturer of the defective product can be held liable. In such cases, it would be a good idea to preserve the vehicle in its current condition, unaltered, so it can be thoroughly examined by an expert for evidence or defects or malfunctions. If the accident was the result of a dangerous or defective roadway, the governmental agency in charge of maintaining the roadway can be held liable. Under California Government Code Section 911.2, any personal injury or wrongful death claim against a public entity must be properly filed within 180 days of the incident. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will better advise car accident victims and their families about their legal rights and options.
