DWP Workers Injured in Los Angeles DUI Car Accident

By

Three workers for the Department of Water and Power were injured in a Los Angeles car accident after they were hit by a suspected drunk driver while working in Los Feliz. According to a report on KTLA News, the DWP employees were working in the 5800 block of Franklin Avenue early morning on December 1, 2009 when the driver crashed through the work zone and injured the workers. Los Angeles police officials said the car also struck a DWP vehicle. The female driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. Two passengers in her car were uninjured. The three workers were transported to a local hospital with injuries, but they have been listed in stable condition.

I’m relieved that these workers, who were out there in the early hours of the morning doing their jobs, were not seriously injured in this car accident that was apparently caused by a drunk driver. I wish these injured victims the very best for a quick and complete recovery. They will be in my prayers.

California DUI Laws

If the details of this news report are accurate, it seems that the driver was at fault. If she is found guilty of DUI, she could be looking at serious criminal charges. It is against California law to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”

In this particular case, the workers will be entitled to receive workers compensation benefits from their employer. However, they could also file a claim against the negligent driver who ran into them, causing the accident and injuries. In such cases, injured victims could receive compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages and other damages. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury attorney will be able to advise these injured victims about their legal rights and options.
