The Los Angeles Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a hit-and-run driver who left a person riding an electric scooter severely injured.
According to a KTLA news report, on the night of Oct. 17, a gray Toyota Camry traveling west on Rochester Avenue negotiated a left turn onto southbound Federal Avenue. The vehicle then collided with an electric scooter traveling south on Federal. The rider was ejected from the scooter and fell onto the roadway.
Ongoing Investigation
The driver of the Camry failed to stop, identify himself/herself, or render aid to the injured victim as required by the law, officials said. Paramedics transported the injured victim to a local hospital where the person is said to be in serious but stable condition. Officials are offering a reward of up to $25,000 to community members who provide information leading to the hit-and-run driver’s identification, apprehension, or conviction. Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives at 213-473-0234.
We are relieved to note that the rider of the scooter who was struck is in stable condition, even though their injuries were serious. We wish the injured victim the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Laws and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver failed to stop or render aid to the injured victims as required under California Vehicle Code 20001 (a). Officials are taking this opportunity to remind all Los Angeles motorists about this important law, which makes it a felony crime to leave the scene of an injury or fatal crash.
In such cases, however, the injured hit-and-run victims struggle not only physically as they cope with the pain and the recovery process, but also financially as they face medical expenses and other unforeseen costs. There is also the emotional struggle of not knowing who was responsible and being unable to hold that at-fault party accountable.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a hit-and-run crash, it is important that you contact an experienced Los Angeles hit and run lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and help ensure that your legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims and their families regarding how their own auto insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run lawyer and how they can seek compensation in cases where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
