Desiree Harris, 28 and Brittany Van Zile, 26, were seriously injured in a Fresno area car accident the afternoon of November 21, 2010. According to The Merced Sun-Star, the injury car accident occurred on Highway 145 near Madera. The two Merced women were travelling in a 2005 Nissan Sentra when a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into the Nissan. The Pontiac’s driver, Honorio Tecpile, 21, had apparently drifted off the road and overcorrected before entering oncoming traffic lanes. Both women suffered major injuries, as did a female passenger in the Pontiac. Tecpile and his passenger Esquel Piepile, 18, sustained moderate injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
My thoughts and prayers are with Desiree Harris and Brittany Van Zile following this major injury car accident. I wish them both and the other injured victims of this horrific accident a complete and speedy recovery.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 21 people were killed and 464 were injured due to car accidents in the unincorporated areas of Madera County. Countywide, during the same year, there were 32 fatalities and 626 injuries reported as a result of car accidents.
Possible Car Accident Causes
Police are investigating the cause of this injury car accident. Based on this news report, it is not quite clear what caused the driver of the Pontiac to veer into oncoming traffic. According to California Vehicle Code Section 21651 (a): “Whenever a highway has been divided into two or more roadways by means of intermittent barriers or by means of a dividing section of not less than two feet in width, either unpaved or delineated by curbs, double-parallel lines, or other markings on the roadway, it is unlawful…to drive any vehicle over, upon, or across the dividing section.”
Liability Issues
In such cases, injured victims can seek compensation from the at-fault driver for medical expenses, loss of earnings, hospitalization, surgery and other related costs. I trust officials are looking into whether the driver of the Pontiac was under the influence, distracted, speeding or otherwise reckless at the time. Injured victims in such cases would be well-advised to contact an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
