Hit-and-Run Car Accident in San Bernardino Causes Injuries

By

One person was injured after a San Bernardino car accident, which officials say, was caused by a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the injury collision occurred the afternoon of May 24, 2011 at the intersection of Cactus and Bloomington avenues in Rialto. Police say a Dodge Ram pickup truck collided with a Toyota Camry, injuring the Camry’s driver. The driver of the Dodge Ram fled the scene of the accident. Police say the hit-and-run driver may have been a parolee at large. The extent of the victim’s injuries is not known. An investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to the injured victim of this hit-and-run car accident. I wish this victim the very best for a prompt and complete recovery.

Hit-and-Run Statistics

According to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic accident statistics, there were 17,158 hit-and-run car accidents that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California in 2008. A majority of these car accidents involved injuries. There were 247 deaths in 2008 involving hit-and-run collisions statewide.

Leaving the Scene of a Car Accident

Drivers in California who are involved in an accident are required to stop irrespective of who was at fault. They must not only exchange information with the other parties involved, but also obtain medical aid for the injured victim. According to California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a): “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person, shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

I certainly hope officials are able to quickly apprehend this dangerous driver and bring him to justice. There is simply no acceptable excuse, in my opinion, for leaving an injured victim lying on the roadway. “I panicked” or “I was scared” are simply not good enough for me. Stopping at the scene of an accident is about taking responsibility and lending a helping hand to a fellow human being.
