Hit-and-Run Car Accident Injures 16-year-old

By

A teenager who was injured in a hit-and-run car accident in Yuba County has been identified as 16-year-old Jessica Rose. The Appeal-Democrat reports that the injury car accident happened the evening of November 7, 2010 on Rupert Avenue near Hammonton-Smartville Road. Rose was walking along the roadway when she was struck by an approaching SUV. The driver of the SUV that hit Rose did not stop at the scene. Authorities have described the hit-and-run driver as a white woman with black hair. The suspect vehicle is an older model SUV with faded red paint, possibly a Jeep, Montero or Trooper.

My heart goes out to Jessica Rose who fortunately escaped major injury here. I hope and pray that she recovers quickly and completely from whatever injuries she has sustained.

Hit-and-Run Statistics and Law

According to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic accident statistics, there were 17,158 hit-and-run car accidents that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California in 2008. Of these car accidents, there were a total of 247 fatalities involving hit-and-run car accidents statewide. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Holding Hit-and-Run Drivers Responsible

The very act of a motorist leaving the scene of a car accident shows that they have no intention to take responsibility for what happened. Leaving the scene of an accident is not only illegal under California law but it is also a heartless act, which shows complete disregard for the safety of a fellow human being.
