Thirteen people were injured in a bus accident in Los Angeles when a delivery truck collided with a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus early morning on August 3, 2010. The Associated Press reports the truck crash caused injuries to both drivers and to 11 bus passengers in all. The accident occurred at the intersection of Temple and Hill streets in downtown Los Angeles. An investigation is ongoing and no citations have been issued yet.

I am relieved to hear that there were no fatalities or major injuries reported in this truck versus bus collision. My heart goes out to the multiple victims of this crash. I wish them the very best for a swift and full recovery.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 268 deaths and 25,588 injuries were reported involving Los Angeles car accidents. Countywide, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Causes and Liability Issues
This report does not specify what caused this accident. However, the news report does state that the collision occurred at a street intersection. There are several unanswered questions here. Did one of the drivers fail to yield right-of-way? Did either the bus driver or the driver of the delivery truck run a red light at the intersection? Was one of the drivers impaired, speeding, distracted or driving recklessly?
According to California Vehicle Code section 21800 (a): “The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway.”
