Three people — identified as Ramiro Castillo, 41, Jose Ruiz, 23, and, Fernando Guzman, 45, were severely injured in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials say, was caused by the driver of an SUV that made an unsafe lane change. According to a news report in the Calabasas Patch, the injury car accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of the 101 Freeway near Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas the evening of April 9, 2011.
California Highway Patrol officials say the driver of a Toyota 4Runner made an unsafe lane change and struck a Dodge Ram pickup truck, which overturned. Castillo, the driver of the pickup, and Ruiz, a passenger, were transported to a regional medical center. Guzman was ejected from the pickup and suffered broken arms and ribs. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. An investigation is ongoing.
My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this rollover accident — Castillo, Ruiz and Guzman. I wish them all a complete and speedy recovery.
Car Accident Statistics
According to CHP’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and 83 were injured in Calabasas car accidents. During that same year, there were 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries reported involving Los Angeles County car accidents.
Unsafe Lane Change
Based on this news report, officials say that an unsafe lane change made by the driver of the SUV may have caused this major injury collision. California Vehicle Code Section 21658 (a) states that whenever a roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction the vehicle “shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.”
Liability Issues
If it is determined that the driver of the Toyota SUV caused the crash, then, he or she could be held liable for the serious injuries, damages and losses here. In such cases, injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to better advise victims about how their own car insurance policy must apply to an incident where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
