The law offices of Bisnar Chase Personal Injury Attorneys has decided to sponsor a new video in order to increase awareness to the horrors of D.U.I.’s and their consequences. Named “There are no extra lives when you drink and drive,” the video has a powerful message that is meant to snap teens back to reality about the irreversible tragedy that could occur if they were involved in a fatal DUI crash.
The DUI statistics in 2009 are quite appalling. In 2009, there were 10,839 fatalities in crashes involving a driver with a BAC of .08 or higher – 32 percent of total traffic fatalities for the year. The rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2009 was four times higher at night than during the day (37% versus 9%). Furthermore, 6,685 (56%) of the drivers involved in fatal crashes who had been drinking had a BAC of .15 or greater. There is a direct correlation with a driver’s alcohol use and the increase in fatal crashes present in any given year.
California ranked at the top of the list for states with the highest DUI fatalities. California had 1,437 fatalities in 2009 alone from alcohol-related accidents. This is over a third of all vehicle fatalities, which totaled 3,081 that year. And sadly, the statistics for children’s deaths are even more troubling. In 2009, 1,314 children age 14 and younger were fatally injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes. Of those 1,314 killed, 181 (14%) occurred in alcohol-related car accidents.
