Two women who were dining at a restaurant were seriously injured in a Los Angeles car accident after a driver lost control of her car and crashed into the Northridge eatery. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the crash occurred the afternoon of April 12, 2010. The 20-year-old woman who was driving a Nissan Altima told police that she lost control because a van cut her off.
Officials have not yet determined if this driver mistook the gas pedal for the brakes as she tried to avoid a collision. But what she ended up doing was accelerate right through the glass front of the restaurant. The two women who were eating in the restaurant sustained major injuries and were taken to a local hospital. Another male diner also suffered minor injuries from the flying glass. The driver and her two passengers were not injured.
My heart goes out to the two diners who were severely injured here, as well as the other man who was hurt by the shards of glass. What a traumatic experience for the lunch time crowd at the restaurant! I hope and pray that the injured victims recover quickly and completely. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 268 fatalities and 25,588 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles. Countywide, car accidents claimed 667 lives and injured 52,229 people during the same year.
Fault and Liability
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Nissan caused this accident. I trust officials are investigating her account and looking into what exactly caused the woman to plow through the restaurant. Did driver impairment, distraction or other negligent actions in any way play a part in this crash? Was there another vehicle involved? Whose fault was the accident?
If this crash was the Nissan driver’s fault, then she could be held financially responsible for the accident and the resulting injuries and damages. Injured victims can claim compensation to cover medical expenses, cost of hospitalization, loss of earnings, rehabilitation, physical therapy and other related damages. In such cases, injured victims would be well-advised to retain the services of an experienced San Fernando Valley personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the investigation and ensure that their legal rights are protected.
What do you think can be done to make parking lots and businesses safer, with vehicle versus building accidents on the rise?
