Thomas Michael Skelly, 35, was severely injured in a Costa Mesa car accident involving a collision between a motorcycle and a Jeep Cherokee. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the motorcycle accident occurred in the 1600 block of Superior Avenue in Costa Mesa, the night of July 15, 2011. Skelly was travelling southbound when the driver of the Jeep that was heading north turned left. The Jeep pulled ahead of Skelly’s motorcycle and the vehicles collided head-on. Skelly suffered serious injuries in the collision and was transported to an area trauma center. Investigators are searching for witnesses to the crash. An investigation is ongoing.

My thoughts and prayers are with Thomas Michael Skelly following this Orange County car accident. I wish him a complete and speedy recovery.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and 54 were injured in Costa Mesa motorcycle accidents. During that same year, there were 35 fatalities and 801 injuries reported involving Orange County motorcycle accidents.

What Caused This Motorcycle Crash?

Authorities are trying to determine if the driver of the Jeep failed to yield right-of-way while making a left turn. California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Fault and Liability

If it is determined that the driver of the Jeep was at fault, then, he or she can be held liable for the serious injuries and damages caused. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Car accident victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Costa Mesa personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all facets of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
