A man in his 70s suffered serious injuries in a dog bite incident after a pit bull attacked him as he got off a bus in Hemet. According to The Press Enterprise, the dog attack occurred the morning of June 14, 2012 when the man was walking toward the Hemet Valley Mall. Officials say a pack of pit bulls came running out of a yard in his direction. The man was knocked to the ground and one of the dogs bit him repeatedly while the others ran around the area. A passer-by identified as Jeri Berglund, managed to put the man in her car and drove him to a hospital. The man was severely injured and in a state of shock, but is expected to recover.

Officers from the Ramona Humane Society visited the dog owner’s house at the intersection of Western and Latham avenues. They found seven pit bulls, which is a violation of the municipal code that only allows up to three dogs per home. The dog that bit the man was quarantined. A decision will be made later about whether the dog should be euthanized. Officials also said that the owners had recently gotten the attacking pit bull and were “very eager” to give it up. Authorities are considering citing the dog owners in connection with this attack.

Brutal Dog Attack

My heart goes out to this dog attack victim. I wish him the very best for a speedy physical and emotional recovery. I commend the good Samaritan, Berglund, who had the courage and the presence of mind to stop, pick up the victim and transport him to a hospital right away. She is truly a hero! The elderly man’s injuries could have been far worse had he not received her help.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is stepping in to curtail nursing home abuse that is occurring in care facilities in the form of unnecessary over-drugging of patients. According to a 10News report, CMS has resolved to reduce antipsychotic use in nursing homes by 15 percent by the end of 2012. Nursing home advocates such as the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) are welcoming this move especially because government officials are now talking about specific numbers.

The problem of unnecessary and excessive use of antipsychotic drug use has become a serious problem in nursing homes in California and across the nation. Antipsychotic drugs were created to help patients cope with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. However, nursing homes have used them to treat other mental illnesses such as dementia, for which these drugs have not been approved. Nursing homes continue to use these drugs to sedate or “chemically restrain” nursing home patients despite repeated warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that doing so can cause death in the elderly.

An 8-year-old girl was severely injured in a Fountain Valley car accident after being ejected from a minivan, the morning of June 9, 2012. According to a news article in The Orange County Register, the car crash occurred at the intersection of Warner and Bushard avenues in Fountain Valley. Officials say a westbound Toyota Camry struck a southbound Ford Aerostar van and the 8-year-old passenger in the van was ejected. She suffered traumatic, but non-life threatening injuries. Two more children in the van were taken to the hospital as a precaution and two adults in the Camry were hospitalized with unknown injuries. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to have been a factor, but investigators have not ruled out speed or a failure to obey a red light.
