Retired Fire Chief Injured in Glendora Dog Attack
Milford Fonza, a 67-year-old retired fire chief, was severely injured in a dog bite
incident in Glendora, early morning on October 10, 2011. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Fonza was walking in the 1600 block of S. Sunflower Avenue when he was attacked by two pit bulls. Fonza told officials he fought the pit bulls for nearly four minutes with his walking stick. He sustained puncture wounds to his arms, legs, torso and groin and also suffered a separated or broken shoulder. Glendora Police Officer Matt Fenner who was on patrol at the time saw Fonza struggling with the dogs. He hit one of the dogs with his car and then shot and killed the other dog as it charged at him. The dog hit by the car also died shortly after the incident. Officials are still looking for the owner of the dogs.

Although the shores of Huntington Beach are beautiful, dog bites continue to happen and dampen the spirits of the city’s residents. The boardwalk and quaint city streets are wonderful places to spend time, raise a family, and enjoy outdoor life, but that can all be ruined with a terrifying dog bite or attack.

Elderly Woman Killed in Huntington Beach Car Accident
Ruth Brown, 96, of Costa Mesa, was killed in a Huntington Beach car accident involving five vehicles. According to a City News Service report, the fatal car crash occurred at the intersection of Adams Avenue and Bushard Street, the morning of October 7, 2011. Officials say a 2005 Mercedes-Benz stalled in traffic and three vehicles came to a stop behind it. It was then that a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor slammed into the back of the row of stopped cars. Six people were hospitalized in the chain reaction crash. The fatally injured woman was a passenger in a 2005 Toyota. It is unclear why the driver of the Mitsubishi was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision. An investigation is ongoing.

Four Injured in Huntington Beach Car Accident
Four people were injured in a Huntington Beach car accident, which officials say, involved a Chevy Silverado and a Chevy Suburban, the morning of October 6, 2011. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the car crash occurred at the intersection of Heil Avenue and Edwards Street. The driver of the Silverado pickup truck, traveling eastbound on Heil, attempted a left turn when the two vehicles collided. Three occupants of the Suburban and the driver of the Silverado were hospitalized following the crash. The extent of their injuries is not known. An investigation is ongoing.

Driver Killed in Whittier Car Accident
A woman was killed and two others were injured in a Whittier car accident that involved three vehicles. According to a report in The Whittier Daily News, the fatal car crash occurred at the intersection of Mulberry Drive and Greenleaf Avenue in Whittier, the night of October 4, 2011. Officials say the collision occurred when one of the drivers made a left turn in front of another vehicle. A female driver died shortly after the crash at a nearby hospital. Two other drivers sustained relatively minor injuries. Officials are still looking into the cause of the accident.

Singer Burned, Daughter Killed in Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Car Accident
Gilani Taylor, 27, suffered life-threatening injuries and her 9-year-old daughter was killed in a Los Angeles car accident involving a hit-and-run driver. According to a KTLA news report, the fatal hit-and-run accident occurred on the 101 Freeway near Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas, the morning of October 1, 2011. A witness to the fatal crash, who was driving behind Taylor, stated that a white SUV sideswiped Taylor’s Chrysler sedan. The Chrysler then crashed into the center divider and slid on its roof before catching on fire. With the help of several Good Samaritans, Taylor was able to escape her burning vehicle, but they could not rescue her 9-year-old daughter. The girl died from her injuries. Taylor was critically injured and is on a respirator.

Man Injured in Orange County Motorcycle Accident
A motorcyclist was injured in an Orange County car accident after he was hit by a vehicle, the morning of October 3, 2011. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the motorcycle accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of the 22 Freeway at Fairview Street in Orange. California Highway Patrol officials say the driver of a Mercury Mariner SUV merged from the carpool lane of the freeway and entered into the path of a man riding a Yamaha R6 motorcycle. The motorcyclist then swerved to avoid being hit by the SUV, but ended up crashing into the back of a Chevy Silverado pickup that had stopped in traffic lanes. The motorcyclist was transported to an area hospital for treatment. An investigation is ongoing.
