Leonard Alexander Cunningham, 33, was killed in a San Diego car accident, which police report, involved a hit-and-run driver the evening of January 15, 2011. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred on Balboa Avenue near Mount Alifan Drive in Clairemont. Cunningham was struck by a hit-and-run motorist and was then run over by a second motorist. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. An investigation is ongoing.

San Diego Pedestrian Accidents
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 23 people were killed and 533 were injured in San Diego pedestrian accidents. During that same year, 63 fatalities and 998 injuries occurred due to San Diego County pedestrian accidents.
Leaving the Scene of a Car Accident
Under California law, it is a felony to leave the scene of a car accident when someone has been injured or killed. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
