California law requires that all drivers be insured. For many however, the cost of insurance is too high to maintain and many low-income drivers simply go without it to the detriment of everyone. Assemblyman Dave Jones’ bill, SB 171, was set to expire but on September 28, 2010, Schwarzenegger signed a five year extension. SB 171 is the first of its kind in the nation and offers low cost basic insurance to qualifying, low-income drivers with good records.

Under SB 171, all insurers in the state of California are required to sell a certain number of low-cost policies to qualifying drivers. Insurance companies and agents are required by law to inform prospective policyholders about the program. With poverty levels rising this program is more important than ever and insurance companies and agents must be held accountable to inform the public.

Five children were injured in a Riverside car accident that involved an 89-year-old female driver. According to a KABC news report, the serious injury pedestrian accident took place at Cypress and Kirby streets in Hemet the evening of November 12, 2010. Five children — ages 5, 6, 7, 11 and14 — were crossing the street at the intersection. One vehicle stopped, but a second vehicle driven by the elderly woman passed the stopped car and crashed into the children. Three of the children suffered critical injuries and two of them sustained serious injuries. The driver has not been cited pending an official investigation into the car accident.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of these injured children. Apparently, they were crossing the street to return home after playing in a nearby park. Tragic! These injured children and their families will be in my thoughts and prayers.

A woman who was killed in a pedestrian accident in National City has been identified as 53-year-old Maria Trinidad Anguiano Galindo. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Galindo was walking in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of D Avenue and East 18th Street the morning of November 5, 2010, when she was struck by a pickup truck that was turning left. Galindo sustained fatal injuries. The driver has not been cited or arrested pending an official investigation.

A teenager who was injured in a hit-and-run car accident in Yuba County has been identified as 16-year-old Jessica Rose. The Appeal-Democrat reports that the injury car accident happened the evening of November 7, 2010 on Rupert Avenue near Hammonton-Smartville Road. Rose was walking along the roadway when she was struck by an approaching SUV. The driver of the SUV that hit Rose did not stop at the scene. Authorities have described the hit-and-run driver as a white woman with black hair. The suspect vehicle is an older model SUV with faded red paint, possibly a Jeep, Montero or Trooper.

My heart goes out to Jessica Rose who fortunately escaped major injury here. I hope and pray that she recovers quickly and completely from whatever injuries she has sustained.

Lauren Ann Freeman, 21, was killed in a hit-and-run car accident in West Hollywood after she was struck by a Bentley while walking in a crosswalk. According to a CBS News report, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred the night of November 10, 2010, when Freeman was crossing the street at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Hammond Street. Ryan Bowman, an Australian national and Venice resident, turned himself to police the following day in connection with the incident. Police say alcohol may have also played a part in this accident. Immediately after hitting Freeman, Bowman drove away from the scene, abandoned the Bentley in a residential neighborhood and fled on foot.

A man suffered major injuries in an Orange County car accident after he was struck by a vehicle while walking in a marked crosswalk. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury car accident occurred the evening of November 10, 2010 when the man was walking in a crosswalk near Santa Ana Boulevard and Ross Street. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital and is listed in critical condition. Police have not arrested or cited the driver pending an official investigation.

My heart goes out to this injured victim and his family for what they are going through at this time. I wish this man the very best for a quick and complete recovery from his injuries. He and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Four people were injured in a San Diego car accident which police say, was caused by a drunk driver. According to a news report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the injury car accident took place the morning of November 7, 2010 on Palm Avenue in the South Bay area. Officials say a speeding BMW sideswiped a vehicle, which was then pushed into an unoccupied parked car.

Two people in the vehicle struck by the BMW, including a 34-year-old woman and her 17-year-old daughter were transported to a local hospital for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The woman sustained a broken femur. The 29-year-old driver of the BMW and his 30-year-old female passenger were also treated for injuries. The driver of the BMW was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

A mother and her daughter were killed in a Los Angeles car accident when a car hit them as they stood on the sidewalk. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Coliseum Street in Leimert Park, the afternoon of November 6, 2010. A Volkswagen Beetle and a Chevrolet pickup collided at the intersection. The Volkswagen then crashed into the 89-year-old woman and her daughter. The elderly woman died at the scene of the car accident, while the daughter, believed to be in her 60s, died at a nearby hospital later that night. The driver of the pickup truck was cited for failing to yield right-of-way.

An 11-year-old boy was critically injured in an Orange County car accident when he was struck by a van while riding his bike. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the serious injury bicycle accident occurred at the intersection of Brookdale Lane and Sunridge Drive in Huntington Beach the morning of November 5, 2010. Police report that the boy was struck by a 1970 Volkswagen van when he tried to cross the street. The young victim of this car accident sustained major head injuries despite wearing a helmet. Police are looking for witnesses to this car accident. An investigation is ongoing.

A hit-and-run car accident in Los Angeles left an 18-year-old man with serious injuries the morning of October 30, 2010. The pedestrian was walking near the intersection of Vanowen Street and Noble Avenue when he was struck by a white, four-door sedan, possibly a Nissan Maxima or an Infiniti. The car left the scene of the pedestrian accident. The teenager was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The hit-and-run driver is still at large.
