A 23-year-old man was seriously injured in a Costa Mesa motorcycle accident after colliding with a car. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the collision occurred just before noon on January 7, 2017 on Harbor Boulevard between Adams Avenue and Mesa Verde Drive. Police said the motorcyclist suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to an area trauma center. He is said to be in serious condition. The car’s driver was uninjured. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. No arrests or citations were reported.

Khoa Truong, 59, and Kimmy Hua, 79, were killed in a Westminster car accident involving two vehicles. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal crash occurred the morning of January 2, 2017 at Beach Boulevard and Madison Avenue. Police say a convertible that was northbound on Beach collided with a Toyota Avalon that was turning left onto Madison. The sedan rammed into the front entrance of a flower shop on Beach Boulevard.

Hua was a passenger in the Toyota and died at the scene. Truong, who was driving the vehicle, was transported to an area hospital where he later died. A woman in her 50s, who was driving the convertible, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The shop was open at the time, but thankfully, no one was injured. Police said speed, alcohol or drugs don’t seem to have been factors in this collision. The investigation is still ongoing.

Firefighters rescued 21 people nearly eight hours after they became stranded 125 feet up on the disabled Sky Cabin ride at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the amusement park incident occurred the afternoon of December 30, 2016 when the ride became stuck. There were 20 passengers and one operator aboard the slow-moving ride, which gives riders panoramic views of Orange County. No one was injured although some riders appeared distraught.

The riders, both adults and children, were harnessed to firefighters who lowered them one by one. It took nearly eight hours for the entire rescue operation to be completed. The ride goes up to more than 180 feet. It apparently got stuck at 125 feet. There is no word yet on what caused the incident. Knott’s has shut down the ride until an investigation into the cause is complete. The ride got stuck on June 22, 2008 as well, but that rescue operation was completed in an hour without injuries. Detectives in Hawthorne have released a disturbing video of a hit-and-run crash that occurred on December 17, 2016. According to a report in The Daily Breeze, three pedestrians were struck in a crosswalk in the city. All three victims were treated in a hospital and are recovering from their injuries. The father of a 14-year-old West Hills boy who suffered a traumatic brain injury after being sucker-punched by another teen has launched a website and a movement to combat bullying and random acts of violence, while promoting kindness. According to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News, Ed Peisner has launched Jordanstrong.org in an effort to help prevent what happened to his son Jordan, who can no longer play sports or skateboard like other kids as a result of the injury he suffered. David Fear, 64, died from injuries he suffered in a dog attack in Grover Beach, a city in San Luis Obispo County. According to a report in The Tribune News, the dog attack occurred the afternoon of December 20, 2016, when Fear and his neighbor, 85-year-old Betty Long were attacked by two dogs in the 1100 block of Nacimiento Avenue. Police and fire officials arrived on the scene to find both Fear and Long suffering from serious injuries and two dogs – a Belgian Malinois and a German shepherd – running around in the area. A mother driving with her son died in a Whittier car accident, which officials say, was caused by two suspected street racers who lost control and crashed. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal car accident occurred the night of December 16, 2016 when one of the speeding vehicles slammed into the woman’s car on Colima Road just north of Mar Vista Street. Police arrested Corey James Kiefer and Jacob Zamora, both 22, on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.

The two cars involved were a white Hyundai and a black BMW, both racing one another. One of the vehicles lost control and struck the other, sending the Hyundai into opposing lanes, striking an oncoming Honda Accord. The female driver was pronounced dead at a local hospital while her juvenile son was transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Officials are still looking into whether drunk driving played a role in the crash.

Two people were killed and one person was severely injured in a fiery street-racing crash in Anaheim early morning on December 10, 2016. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the crash was reported in the 1700 block of West Ball Road. Witnesses told police two cars were speeding west on Ball Road at 80 to 100 mph, in a 40 mph zone, when the driver of an 2003 Infiniti lost control and jumped the curb shearing a light pole and hitting several parked cars.

Injury and Fatalities

It then crashed into a home and burst into flames two feet from the living room of Martin Sanchez who officials say may have saved the life of the car’s 24-year-old passenger by using a garden hose to put out the flames that had spread to the man’s clothes. First responders found two people dead in the car.

The passenger is said to be in critical condition, but is expected to survive. The male driver of the Infiniti and the other male passenger, have not yet been identified because they were both badly burned. Police are continuing their search for the second vehicle, described as a red sports car, possibly a Mustang or Camaro. Continue reading →

Two female pedestrians were killed and two others were critically injured when a silver Mustang GT struck a streetlight and fire hydrant in Echo Park. According to a KTLA news report, the deadly crash occurred the morning of November 20, 2016 in the 1000 block of Rosemont Avenue when 46-year-old Bryan Gin lost control of his car and ran into three women waiting at a bus stop on Sunset Boulevard. A child suffered facial injuries after being struck by a large metal object on the 57 Freeway. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident occurred the afternoon of November 19, 2016 on the southbound 57 Freeway south of Katella Avenue in Anaheim. California Highway Patrol officials say Kathleen Hawks was driving a Hyundai sedan with her son riding in the front passenger seat when a second vehicle struck the metal object, which was in the roadway, and “launched” it toward her car.

The metal object smashed through the Hawks’ windshield and struck the boy in his face, causing injuries that were later treated at an area trauma center. No information was available about the second vehicle. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact CHP’s Santa Ana bureau at 714-567-6000. The investigation is ongoing.
