A woman in her 40s was seriously injured when she was attacked by pit bulls that escaped from a neighbor’s yard. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the dog attack occurred the morning of August 12, 2013. The woman was walking her smaller dog in the 6600 block of 6th Street. The pit bulls apparently first went after the woman’s little dog and then attacked her as she picked up her dog. The pit bull tore off the right side of her face. She also had a gaping wound on her right arm, officials said. The dogs’ owner was cited and the dogs will be euthanized.

A new study by Ohio State University has found that about 2 million injuries each year occur as a result of pedestrians walking while using their cell phones. According to a news report in The Daily Breeze, Jack Nasar, the professor who conducted the study, said that distracted walking is not yet an offense, but that it can be potentially dangerous for pedestrians. He says that although a pedestrian’s body may be in the environment, his or her head is elsewhere. When a pedestrian is texting, his or her eyes and attention are seldom on the roadway.

A 71-year-old woman was killed in a Los Angeles County crash after a vehicle that was making a right turn struck her. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Colima Road and Otterbein Avenue in the city of Rowland Heights.

Seven people were hurt after a car plowed through the window of a busy South Los Angeles nail salon, The Associated Press reports. Police say about a dozen people were in the salon just after 2 p.m. on July 30, 2013 when a car crashed into the business. The driver apparently tried to back out and get away, but that he did not get far because his car was badly damaged.

A 2-year-old girl was injured in an animal attack incident at an Orange County cemetery after a coyote pounced on her and dragged her around the grounds. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, Klarissa Barrera of Long Beach, was visiting a family member’s grave at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress on July 18, 2013 at Forest Lawn cemetery with her siblings and her mother, Michelle Luper, when the attack occurred. Her mother said the coyote dragged the child over headstones and that the girl’s nails were bent backwards from grabbing the ground.

Officials are looking into how 52-year-old Rosa Ayala-Goana fell to her death while riding a rollercoaster the evening of July 19, 2013 at the Six Flags amusement park in Arlington, a suburb of Dallas.

According to a report in the Corpus-Christi Caller, witnesses said the woman was concerned moments before the 14-story Iron Rattler rollercoaster ride began that the safety bar had not completely engaged. The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office confirmed that the 52-year-old Dallas resident suffered multiple traumatic injuries during the fall.

A 5-year-old girl was seriously injured in a dog attack outside a Starbucks in Ventura the night of July 18, 2013. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the dog bite incident occurred in the 600 block of East Main Street. Witnesses told police that the girl and a parent walked by the dog in front of the coffee shop when it lunged at it, bit into her abdomen and lifted her off the ground.

A 3-year-old girl died in a swimming pool accident after she drowned in a community pool in Irvine while being watched by a caregiver, The Daily Pilot reports. Officials say the toddler was being watched by a caregiver at Stone Creek Swim Club in Irvine when she “disappeared.” The caregiver and lifeguards searched for about 10 minutes before they found the child in a spa. Irvine police and firefighters attempted to resuscitate the child. She was transported to an area trauma center where she was pronounced dead.

An elderly woman was struck and seriously injured as she was crossing a roadway in El Monte. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley News Tribune, the injury collision occurred the morning of July 10, 2013 at the intersection of Peck Road and Hallwood Drive. The woman, said to be in her late 80s or early 90s, was taken to a trauma center with serious injuries, but appeared to be in stable condition, police said. The driver remained at the scene and talked to the authorities. No citations or arrests were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

Many survivors of the Asiana Airlines airplane crash in San Francisco have an unusual pattern of serious spinal cord injuries, which doctors say, show how severely and violently they were shaken in spite of wearing their seatbelts. According to an article in the USA Today, two people have been unable to move their legs. Many others have needed surgery to stabilize their spines so they can move. Several passengers have also sustained crushed vertebrae that compress the spinal cord and ligaments that have been so stretched and torn that they cannot hold neck and back joints in place.
