Jarod Maxwell, 14, was fatally injured in a San Bernardino County car accident after a car struck him as he was on his way to school. According to a news report in The Victorville Daily Press, the pedestrian accident occurred the morning of September 13, 2012 along Baldy Mesa Road in Baldy Mesa. Maxwell was riding his skateboard in the northbound lane when a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse driven by a woman in the same direction hit him. Maxwell was not wearing a helmet and sustained major injuries. He died shortly after the crash at a local hospital. The investigation is ongoing.

A woman in her 40s was killed in a Santa Ana car accident after a vehicle struck her and left the scene. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal hit-and-run crash occurred in the 1500 block of West First Street, early morning on September 13, 2012. Police say the homeless woman was pushing a shopping cart when a vehicle hit her and the cart in which she carried her personal belongings. The driver fled without stopping to help the victim. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released a vehicle description, but witnesses said it may have been a white colored pickup truck and that it possibly sustained significant front-end damage. Vanessa Rosales, 38, of Adelanto, was killed in a Victorville car accident, which officials say involved a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle, the night of September 9, 2012. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, the fatal crash occurred on Air Expressway west of Village Drive. A deputy was driving a prisoner to the Apple Valley Juvenile Detention Center when the patrol car rear-ended a Honda Accord in the eastbound lanes. The Honda then swerved and struck a Mercedes.

Rosales, who was a passenger in the Honda, sustained fatal injuries. The Honda’s driver, Immysha Smith and another juvenile passenger in the Honda, were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Jennifer Tompkins, the driver of the Mercedes, the deputy and the juvenile prisoner, suffered injuries that were described as “minor.” The sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team is looking into the cause of this crash.

Aaron Dobine, 27, of Laguna Niguel, was killed in a motorcycle crash in Costa Mesa after losing control of his motorcycle. According to a news article in The Orange County Register, the fatal accident occurred the evening of September 10, 2012. California Highway Patrol officials say Dobine was riding a 2010 Harley-Davidson and was making his way from the southbound 405 Freeway to the 73 toll road when he lost control and hit the center median. Dobine was thrown from his motorcycle and sustained fatal injuries. Investigators suspect that Dobine may have been traveling at a high rate of speed. At this time, they do not believe other vehicles were involved. The investigation is ongoing.

A neighbor’s two dogs attacked a man inside his apartment in North Mission Viejo, the morning of September 6, 2012, near the corner of Santa Margarita and Marguerite. According to a news report in The Mission Viejo Patch, the dog bite incident involving two pit bulls occurred in the apartment located in the 21600 block of Marguerite Parkway. The victim was bitten in the back of the leg. His wife told police that the dogs took a “chunk of meat out of her husband’s leg.” Officials are still investigating this incident. It is not clear if the dogs’ owners will face charges.

Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy, Tim Africano, suffered major injuries in a Lake Forest motorcycle accident after his cycle hit a patch of wet road and crashed. According to a news report in The Lake Forest Patch, the injury crash occurred as Africano was headed south on Santiago Canyon Road near Ridgeline Road on his police motorcycle, early morning on September 6, 2012. Officials say Africano’s Honda lost traction with the pavement and he was thrown from the motorcycle. He was transported to an area hospital with major injuries. He is expected to survive. The California Highway Patrol is investigating this incident.

My thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Tim Africano as he recovers from his injuries. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Africano was recently honored by his department for the dramatic rescue of a suicidal teen from a ledge of the Banderas Bridge in Rancho Santa Margarita. He held onto the boy until two other deputies helped him pull the boy up.

The San Diego District Attorney’s office has filed four misdemeanor criminal charges against a man who was caring for four pit bulls that were involved in a brutal dog attack last year. The incident occurred along a Valley Center trail. The dogs viciously attacked two brothers – Richard and John Garriston – who were running at the time. Jose Ledesma, 40, who was caring for his friend’s pit bulls, has been charged with two counts of failing to protect the public from the dogs and two counts of failing to restrain a dog. If convicted of all charges, Ledesma faces one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Following the incident, life has been difficult for Richard Garritson, according to the report. A competitive runner, Garritson was severely bitten in his arms and legs and had to undergo surgery. He told the newspaper soon after the attack that he thought he was going to die then and there.

Two teenaged girls suffered injuries in an El Monte car accident after a pickup truck went up the sidewalk and struck them, the afternoon of September 4, 2012. According to a news article in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the injury crash occurred in the 3500 block of Durfee Drive. Police say the Ford F-150 pickup truck ran over the sidewalk and hit the girls. The teens were transported to an area hospital in stable condition. The nature or extent of their injuries is not known. No arrests were made. The investigation is ongoing.

According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the fatal crash occurred on the 5 Freeway near Gorman. California Highway Patrol officials say the cars were traveling southbound and collided with each other for an unknown reason. Four of the injured have been hospitalized in critical condition, while five more sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Four people were hospitalized in a Los Angeles car accident that involved several vehicles, including a police cruiser, the morning of August 30, 2012. According to a news article in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the multi-car crash occurred on the westbound 60 Freeway near Hacienda Boulevard in Hacienda Heights. Officials are still trying to determine what caused the LAPD Ford Crown Victoria, tow truck, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Toyota Solara sedan, Toyota Sienna minivan and Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck to collide. A woman inside the PT Cruiser was hospitalized, as were two men and a woman. None of the injuries appear to have been life threatening.
