A woman was killed and five others were critically injured in a car accident in Wilmington.
According to a KTLA news report, the crash occurred the morning of Aug. 23 in the 1000 block of North Wilmington Boulevard. A preliminary investigation revealed that the first vehicle hit the second vehicle causing the vehicle that was struck to lose control and strike a female pedestrian who was crossing the street.
Death and Severe Injuries
A man identified as Tim Gomez who was involved in the crash said the driver of a white Toyota ran a red light and T-boned a black Chevy Tahoe. Gomez said the driver of the Toyota was not slowing down. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital but died from her injuries. The five occupants of the two vehicles were also taken to hospitals and were listed as having moderate to severe injuries.
We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the deceased victim for their tragic loss. We also wish the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Laws and Liability Issues
Based on this report, a witness said a driver who ran a red light, which is illegal, triggered the fatal crash. California Vehicle Code section 21453 (a) states: “A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.”
We trust officials are looking into what might have caused the Toyota to run the red light at the intersection. Was he or she driving recklessly or speeding on the roadway? Were drugs or alcohol factors in this collision?
In such cases, in addition to facing criminal charges and penalties, at-fault drivers can also be held financially responsible for the injuries, damages, and losses they cause. Injured victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
Families of deceased victims may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation as well. An experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer will be able to advise injured victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
