Detectives in Hawthorne have released a disturbing video of a hit-and-run crash that occurred on December 17, 2016. According to a report in The Daily Breeze, three pedestrians were struck in a crosswalk in the city. All three victims were treated in a hospital and are recovering from their injuries. The incident occurred at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Rocket Road just outside the SpaceX rocket manufacturing plant.
Injury Hit-and-Run Crash
The video shows four pedestrians crossing the street with the green light. Right then, a light-colored, possibly gray, silver or light green, Toyota Camry heading north at high speed ran a red light at Jack Northrop Avenue and continued on to Rocket Road. The driver again ran the red light hitting three out of the four pedestrians. One jumped out of the way.
The driver continued on without slowing, police said. They are hoping the public might be able to offer tips regarding the suspect. They are also looking for the driver of a small, gray, two-door pickup truck that appeared to chase after the suspect. Police believe the hit-and-run vehicle was a 2006 Camry with damage to the right front corner. Anyone with information is asked to call Hawthorne police at 310-349-2702.
Leaving the Scene of a Crash
It is illegal under California law to leave the scene of a car accident. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
Motorists in California are required to exchange pertinent information with everyone involved in the collision and most importantly, are required to provide assistance to the injured. In this case, the driver not only committed several violations including speeding, running red lights and striking pedestrians who were walking with a green light in a marked crosswalk, but also fled the scene without stopping to help the injured.
Struggles of Hit-and-Run Victims
A hit-and-run crash leaves victims physically, emotionally and financially devastated. Victims not only have to face mounting medical expenses and deal with lost income because they have to take time off work, but they also have to wonder if the person who brought them this misery would be apprehended or brought to justice. Injured victims in such cases would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles car accident attorney who will fight for their rights and help them secure maximum compensation for their losses.
