Chandra Woods, 37, was killed when her car apparently stalled on the Riverside (91) Freeway in Corona and was struck from behind by a truck. According to an NBC news report, Woods died a little later after the crash, which occurred near Smith Avenue. California Highway Patrol officials said Woods was at the wheel of a 2020 Toyota Camry that came to a stop for unknown reasons in the slow lane.
Moments later, the driver of a Hino box truck, traveling at about 55 mph, struck the Toyota from behind. Corona Fire Department paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and found Woods gravely injured. Her passenger, 27-year-old Marcus Reeves, sustained moderate injuries. Reeves was transported to a regional trauma center for treatment.
We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of Chandra Woods for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. We also wish the injured victim, Reeves, the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Causes and Compensation Issues
Based on this news report, it is unclear why this fatal crash occurred. There are a number of questions here that are still unanswered. Why did Woods’s Toyota Camry come to a stop? Was the location where this crash occurred, well lit? Was the driver of the box truck impaired or distracted at the time of the collision? Was the driver of the truck traveling at an unsafe speed? Did drowsy driving play a part in this collision? We trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what caused this crash.
If the driver of the box truck is determined to have been negligent, the driver and his or her employer (if the driver was on the job) can be held accountable. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering and loss of love and companionship.
Steps to Take
If you have been injured in any type of auto accident, it is important to take a number of steps in order to protect your rights. Filing a police report, getting prompt medical attention, gathering evidence at the scene and contacting an experienced personal injury lawyer are all important measures that must be taken in order to protect your rights. An experienced car accident lawyer will be able to better advise victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
